Yaho! I'm Mandy. A 2D Artist specialising in illustration work, primarily in concept and character design.

Featured Projects

My name is Mandy Wong and I'm an artist based in Gold Coast. I've been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil; passionate about creating fun characters and designs.

I've studied in Bachelor of Games and Interactive Environments (Animation), as well as Bachelor of Business (Advertising) at the Queensland University of Technology.

In my free time, I'm creating my own characters for personal projects or for some Dungeons & Dragons. I'm usually drawing on my phone with IbisPaint, but I also draw on a tablet from time to time. Most of my own personal works just include my Self-persona in a Fandom I enjoy.

Mui the Catfish Idol

Autodesk Maya | Substance Painter | Solo Project

3D humanoid character modelled, rigged and rendered in Maya. Textures done in Substance Painter.

Pebble Quest

Unity | PC | 5 Person Project

A cosy adventure game about collecting unique pebbles scattered through rivers, forests, and caves, each one recorded in a scrapbook that grows into a personal keepsake of discovery.

Going Home Club

IbisPaint | Solo Project

My personal brand, featuring a house shaped mascot - Buggi.

Mui the Catfish Idol

Autodesk Maya | Substance Painter | Solo Project

This was part of a unit called KNB127: Digitals Creatures where I created this 3D model. This involved creating an humanoid character that had fingers that could be rigged. This was modelled, UV unwrapped and rigged through Autodesk Maya, textured in Substance Painter. This was also rendered in Maya.

Concepts

The character that I chose is a humanoid catfish original character. This was made as an original character for the game Splatoon that has humanoid squid and octopus characters, along with other sea creatures.I was mostly inspired by the worldbuilding, especially the in game music groups and bands.

Turnaround

I chose Mui the Catfish as I believed it was simple but unique enough to rig - especially figuring out how to create the whiskers.

Process

Going Home Club

IbisPaint | Solo Project

This project started based on the idea of wanting to sell merchandise at a convention artist alley. I wanted to be easily recognisable while keeping it simple.I had always been interested in the idea of a going home club in Japanese culture of their schools and featured in many animes. So I worked with a strong visual in mind - a summer's day with students going home. Except with a twist: What if a mundane student who is part of the going home club gets turned magical girl?

Concepts

I decided to create the mascot first or rather what would be representing me as a persona.

This started from a literal sense of "home" and the Japanese culture of the club. It started as highly detailed which didn't seem to suit a mascot or magical girl companion.

This resulted in developing my mascot - Buggi. His name stands for Big Ultra Giga Gignormous Information. He is the main familiar, a part of the magical girl plot.

Rather than familiar or pet, I labelled him as a House Representative, someone who was in charge of caring for the housing economy. This is what lead to a spiral of other characters, even one for my own persona.

Past Artist Alley

Pebble Quest

Unity | PC | 5 Person Project

This was part of a unit called IGB200 Game Studio 2: Applied Game Development where I primarily created 2D elements including character design and UI. I was also the person who created the OST tied to our main gameplay loop. I also had done texturing for the pebbles.Pebble Quest is a project working with the client: QA GOMA, where the prompt is to create an experience inspired by Olafur Eliasson's works - Beauty (1993), Riverbed (2014), and The Cubic Structural Evolution Project (2004).My team included Bec C, Benjamin W, Maeve C, and Scarlett M.

Concepts

Early iterations of the game design and characters that would be met throughout the game was sketched loosely on A3 paper. The intention of a pair was to add to the journey through NPC interaction but also to keep scope small for the art required.

I was definitely more on the storyboarding side of things, concepting the initial progression of the game.

Music Composition

This project provided a unique task, which was to create tracks for each pebble that had to be unique. I took an orchestral approach, where each pebble had a corresponding instrument (18 instruments in total). It was more important that there were 6 unique tracks, that hinted at the melody line which also had matching images to show its significance and quest completion in the player's journey.
